I’ve always loved the variety that working in veterinary practice brings, from consulting with clients and getting to know their pets to the more hands-on challenges of surgery and delving into a complicated medical case. I have a particular interest in ophthalmology and have completed a certificate in this area, which has allowed me to develop my knowledge and experience in caring for patients with eye conditions.

For me, being a vet brings together three things I really enjoy: animals, medicine and people. I love getting to know both my patients and their owners, and helping them feel informed, supported and confident in the care their pets receive.

I grew up on a farm near Thame, so animals have always been a big part of my life. At home, I have an elderly Cocker Spaniel, Ottie, who has taught me so much about being a pet owner, particularly the importance of understanding each individual animal and supporting them as they get older. More recently, I welcomed a rescue Ragdoll kitten, Kitkat, into the family — who is certainly keeping me on my toes!

That’s something I’m passionate about bringing to our practice, alongside high-quality, compassionate veterinary care.

Outside work, I’m married to Jonty and we have a toddler, Edie, who keeps us pretty busy. When I get some time to myself, I love running and Hyrox, baking, and catching up with friends over dinner.

Lizzie: “I believe continuity of care is really important; seeing familiar faces and building a relationship with your vet can make such a difference to both pets and their owners.”

I’ve always enjoyed the variety of general practice. No two days are quite the same, and I love the mix of medicine, working through more complicated cases, and getting to know the people and pets we see over time. I have a particular interest in internal medicine and ultrasonography, and really enjoy the challenge of piecing together a difficult case and working out the best way forward.

A big part of what I enjoy about veterinary practice is the team around you. I love working alongside other vets and nurses, sharing ideas and helping younger vets develop their confidence and skills. There’s something very rewarding about creating an environment where people enjoy their work, keep learning and feel supported to do a really good job.

George, my Border Terrier, came into my life just after I qualified as a vet and was with me for an incredible 17 and a half years. Having him alongside me for almost my entire veterinary career gave me a very personal understanding of what it means to care for a pet through every stage of their life. I now have Betsy, another Border Terrier, who is one year old and has brought me firmly back to the chaos of having a young dog!

That combination of good medicine, a great team and genuinely looking after people as well as their pets is a huge part of what I want us to create at Ottie & George.

Outside work, I’m married to Chris, who you’ll also find helping to keep things running at Ottie & George, and we have two children, Eleanora and Fergus. When I’m not at the practice, I’m happiest getting outside for a walk, cooking or settling down with a good book — usually with Betsy somewhere nearby.

Hilary: “What I enjoy most about being a vet is being able to make things feel a little better — so people leave feeling listened to, reassured and clear about what happens next.”
